Summary
“I hope you know I always held faith in you.” Keebo begins to lead them back. The walk to the dorms always seems long after a trial, but it’s worse this time with how heavy Shuichi’s body feels. “Even when the others were ready to side against you… despite how terribly the truth would hurt us, you knew we had to find it.”
The truth—it’s all he’s good for, it’s the only value he holds to these people. You’re a great detective, Shuichi, they’ve told him. We can’t lose if he’s on the case; it’s such a good thing he’s on their side. Without him, they wouldn’t have survived the first trial. Without him, they’d be unable to find the culprit.
He’s always had to wonder if these people see him as a friend or a lifeline.

This guy, who has been playing with all of his friends, made fun of them, tried to control trials, which were life or death situations, watched all of our friends die, and he wanted his *help*?? Shuichi’s avatar’s face flared up in rage and at the same time a blood vessel icon showed up next to his head. He scoffed and turned to the phone in the salon room. I don’t have time for his lies. We have a potential murder on our hands and he’s asking me this *now*? I’m done with his little games. He picked up the old-looking telephone and pressed the button in the middle of it.
“Shu…” Then his voice trailed off.

Shuichi clutched his stomach, feeling queasy and nauseous. He also felt a bit of vertigo. Excusing himself from class which caused all of his classmates turn to look at him, all curious as to why Shuichi Saihara – the student who would never miss a lesson till now - would want to be excused. He didn’t have any time to explain before he ran full speed to the men’s bathroom and just noticed the burning feeling he had in his throat. It was irritating and it started to hurt.
Without any warning he began to cough uncontrollably – flower petals exiting his mouth as if it was confetti. Red, blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple. Different shades of petals from different flowers. He knew what this meant yet this was impossible. When he finished the detective just stood there, looking at the amount of flower petals in his hands, thinking of a logical solution other than what he already knew. None came to mind. How is this possible?
Saihara Shuichi caught the hanahaki disease but Saihara Shuichi was not in love. He was sure he wasn't.
