As Javert watches Valjean lingering at the dying Fantine’s bedside, he contemplates the change that has come over him — Valjean’s hair is completely white.

Months after Valjean pulls Javert from the Pont au Change, they both find themselves without purpose. Valjean becomes hopeless without Cosette to care for. Meanwhile, Javert's growing doubt about his place in the police force leaves him aimless. But Javert and Valjean's lives have always been irreversibly intertwined. As they learn what it means to change and be changed, they may find that their lives are meant to intertwine in a way neither of them ever expected.

Summary

Summary
Valjean frowns at him, as if Javert is being blasphemous, but Javert is unfazed; he knows Valjean knows it's true. Eventually, it is Valjean who looks away first. "I am sick. I cannot do other things."
Javert cannot help the feeling of panic rising in him, that Valjean may never see sense, and Javert will always have to watch the one he loves labor through some incomprehensible self inflicted purgatory. "You are being difficult," he snaps. "You are sick because you are not eating. So eat."
Valjean is trying to extricate himself from Cosette’s life, but Javert is there to fuss over him. And Javert is very fussy, in his own way.

Summary
He could imagine Valjean perfectly. Sitting up against the headboard where they’d spent so many evenings reading side by side, occasionally turning to him and reading a passage aloud--or just brushing a strand of Javert’s hair behind his ear and kissing him on his cheek. Javert’s hands followed that path without his conscious input: brushing back his hair, pausing at the juncture of skin and sideburn where Valjean’s lips would linger.

A smile tugged at Valjean’s lips, all the more despicably fond for the blush still on his cheeks. He raised Javert’s hand to his lips to press a kiss to the backs of his knuckles. “I’m certain I could bear it.”
