She wishes she hadn’t finished her picture so fast. She doesn’t have anything to do with her hands now, and she can’t just walk away to her bean chair and read her book. That would be rude–which she knows from daddy telling her–and good girls aren’t rude, especially not to their friends.
(Even when they’re asking questions she doesn’t like.)
“You had a birthday, right?” Dina asks, grabbing her green crayon without asking. Her hand moves at once to take it back because it’s hers, but mama and daddy like it when she shares, and she can trust Dina not to break it like some of the kids back in Boston would have just to be mean. “That’s how you know how many years you have.”
“What’s a birthday?” She asks, still watching Dina use the crayon. She can share it, but she wants it back.
“Y’know, a birthday,” Jesse says. “Can I use your purple?”
