Summary
When espers and guides awaken, they are brought into the System, an authoritarian facet of the military where they are trained and used to close rifts and fight the monsters that rip them open.
Seonghwa is a B class guide who becomes entangled with the Outlaws, a group of high class espers who escaped from the System and seek to destroy it as well as to find the truth of the rifts and their inhabitants.

Hongjoong didn’t flinch at Yunho’s violent display, reverting to his usual inscrutable countenance. “He’s guiding us, Yunho. Hurting him is unavoidable.”Yunho couldn’t refute that simple truth, much as he wanted to continue to fight it. To change the reality that Seonghwa’s time with them would only be intervals of such pain. Over and over and over.
Hongjoong sighed, shaking his head and sliding his palm over the side of his face briefly. “Look, Yunho. This isn’t some competition. Seonghwa is a guide, we’re espers. It’s our job to protect him. All of us.”
Yunho shook his head vehemently, unwilling to accept that bullshit reasoning. “I don’t want to protect him because he’s a guide. I want to protect him because he’s Seonghwa.”

Summary
Seonghwa's spent his entire life being forgettable, to the point where he wants nothing more than to forget himself, too.
Giving up on the idea of love and companionship, he throws himself at the mercy of a controversial matchmaking service that specializes in matching up the most desperate loners with packs that have proven too dysfunctional to find that harmonious balance every pack needs.
Willingly drugged into a calm, nearly emotionless version of himself, Hwa should be able to assimilate effortlessly into the Ateez pack that's chosen him. If only it were that easy.

“I can help you.” Hongjoong’s hands rest on top of his, but they don’t move otherwise.
Seonghwa’s laugh is strained. “I’m—I’m okay. I still don’t know if this is a good idea.”
Hongjoong chuckles, but there’s an edge to it that raises alarm bells in Seonghwa’s head, skin prickling with goosebumps. “That’s not the kind of help I’m offering.”
“T-then…?”
It takes Seonghwa a few seconds to realize that maybe he shouldn’t have asked for clarification. Hongjoong’s eyes darken, head tilting just a bit, hands constricting down on his own just a little bit harder. “I’m asking if you want us to help you get off, Seonghwa.”
