"I'm sorry, Chayanne, I'm sorry," his dad said, carefully brushing Chayanne's hair as he sobbed. "They— they don't want us to live. They don't want us to live in this world."
Chayanne tried to chuff assurances to his dad to let him know it was okay, that he wasn't upset with him, but his chest hurts.
"I'm so sorry, Chayanne. I thought it was safe." he tried to take his dad's hand, but Chayanne couldn't move anymore. "I couldn't— I couldn't see him."

He weakly raised his head. The hellish eyes had vanished, leaving Phil alone in the dunes of the sand village. Blood pooled around him and the bodies, staining the ground and turning it crimson.
The bodies. His son and his granddaughter. Dead, on the ground, because of him.
As he felt the last of him slip away, he saw the sign a few feet in front of him.

“What’re you thinkin’ about?”
Chayanne looks back up through the glass windows above them. She doesn’t know about the dragon. At least, as far as Chayanne knows, she doesn’t know about the dragon. He’s never told her, Dad’s never brought it up around her, and Wilbur…no, Wilbur doesn’t seem the type to tell her something like that. Maybe that’s for the best, too.
“The stars,” Chayanne whispers eventually. “And how Dad needs more sleep. You?”
“Same.” She pauses, and then he sees her dark eyes crinkle in a sheepish grin. “Mostly about the stars, though.”
Chayanne returns her smile. She doesn’t know about the dragon, and that’s a good thing. Tallulah not being scared is always a good thing.

Or, Chayanne is up late thinking about how he'll have to face off with the dragon tomorrow. Tallulah is there to stargaze with him.
