“It took a long time to trust that you were truly patriots of this country, and I know now, better than anyone, that there is no greater pleasure for you than dying for it, to serve your repentance through that death as you have so beautifully served me as M.” Mycroft paused to swirl his glass, watching the dark liquid within, pondering. “That is to say, Albert, that I have enjoyed knowing you, and that I admit it will pain me to see you go. So I will be selfish enough to ask if it's possible to convince you otherwise.”
Albert smiled, careworn. “Not likely.”
“If it is not likely,” Mycroft slowly spoke, “Would that not mean there is still a chance?”
Albert reached to refill his glass. “If there is,” he said, “it is infinitesimally small.”
