Summary
Penelope and Colin are overjoyed to be betrothed. So overjoyed they cannot quite keep their hands off of each other. So overjoyed, in fact, that Penelope learns she wishes to do little but swallow down her fiance's spend. One poorly-timed mention of their illicit encounters means the pair are forced to spend the weeks before their wedding apart and miserable.
Eloise has longed for Penelope to pay attention to her once more. She learns of Penelope's new fixation and devises a plan that will give both her and her dearest friend just what they desire. Eloise learned of this possibility from her elder siblings, who have treated her (and each other) unnaturally indeed.
Once Colin learns of Eloise's deceit, he feels he must prove Penelope will choose him over all others.

The gold clasp clicks. “There.”
The necklace settles heavily around Penelope’s throat. It is rather short, the pearls pressing weightily against Penelope’s clavicle above the neckline of her simple dark blue uniform, and Penelope feels suddenly as if she is wearing not a necklace but a collar. A chain.
Eloise’s eyes meet hers, and a soft little gasp escapes Penelope. Barely a breath, really, just the tiniest inhale, but Eloise’s sharp eyes catch it, lingering upon Penelope’s parted lips, and for some reason the young woman looks… pleased.
A savage sort of triumph on her face, Eloise pulls away.
Why is Penelope trembling so hard? She takes a deep, shaky breath.
OR: penelope is brought on to work as a maid for Eloise Bridgerton just before her wedding to Lord Morrison
