Summary
Eddie’s eyebrow quirked upwards, unimpressed. “Buck, it’s obvious something’s off.”
It was a small thing, Eddie’s words, just a gentle nudge, but Buck felt his frustration prickling. He’d spent the past 36 hours holding himself together, forcing himself to look capable, and the last thing he needed was Eddie with his deep, ever feeling eyes prying him open. He set his jaw, pulling things out of his locker with a little more force than necessary.
“I’m fine, Eddie. Really.” He slung his bag over his shoulder, avoiding as much eye contact as he could. If he let himself stare just a little longer, he knew he’d break. He’d fold in on himself, let Eddie pull out the broken pieces of himself until nothing was left. “Don’t need to worry about me.”
— or, in which Buck gets sick and doesn’t tell Eddie, and yet somehow, Eddie still finds out.

Summary
The sharp pain from his ribs had only gotten worse, and, while Eddie knew that they weren’t broken, he also knew that they were bruised as hell. He would be tempted to check it out, make sure nothing is too messed up, but the idea of getting up and moving sounded like too much of an effort.
The door to the bunk room opened and shut quietly.
“You awake?”
---or, in which Eddie gets caught in the middle of a fight on accident, and Buck is there to help him afterwards.

Summary
Buck had ignored it at first—like he always did. It started with a little scratch in his throat, the kind that could be waved away with a glass of water or two. But by lunchtime, it had turned into a full-on headache, and by the time his shift ended, he was dragging. Still, when he got home, he told himself he was fine. He could just sleep it off.
He was wrong
--- or, in which Eddie Diaz has an uncanny sixth sense when it comes to knowing when Buck isn't okay.

Summary
“No, you don’t get it, do you?” Eddie’s voice was quieter, but the emotion was amplified ten fold, bubbling up and over. “You think you’re invincible, Buck, but you’re not. And one day… one day, you’re going to push too far, and I’m going to be the one standing there, watching them pull your body out of some debris.”
Buck swallowed, hard. All the words he wanted to say were stuck in his throat,
“I can’t… I can’t keep doing this,” Eddie said, barely more than a whisper.
---in which Buck is reckless, Eddie is terrified to lose him, and it takes another burning building for them to talk again.

Summary
The pillow was soft beneath his head as he laid down, the warmth of the blankets settling into his bones. The sound of Eddie’s soft footsteps down the hall was a reassurance, a reminder.
The next morning he would go to the loft and pick up a bag of his own clothes, and give Eddie’s clothes back. But if Buck was planning on bringing enough clothes to last him a few more days than necessary, then that was his business and his business alone.--- or, five times Buck finds an excuse to sleep at Eddie's house, and the one time he doesn't have to.
