“Have you heard Benedict’s getting a new apprentice?” Hugh asked the bookseller casually.
Benedict scowled at Hugh. “What Hugh means to say is that there’s a testing at the Apothecaries Hall tomorrow.”
“And you’re going?” Isaac inquired.
The apothecary sighed, then nodded. “Given how hard it is to find someone qualified for the position, I doubt I’ll find a boy that’s suitable.”
“A shilling says you’ll come away with a boy tomorrow,” Hugh quipped, grinning at his friend’s raised eyebrows.
“Are you so sure of yourself, then?” Benedict said. “Fine. Easiest shilling I’ll make all week.”
Hugh laughed, a smile breaking out across his features. “We’ll see about that.”
