    Back in the laboratory, Utterson was investigating.

    He was in too much of a state of shock yesterday to do much. The night before, when his good friend Jekyll disappeared, he simply looked around, trying to convince himself that Jekyll was still there somewhere, but it was no use. The room was messy, flasks of potions scattered across the floor, chemicals everywhere, and several notebooks filled with instructions to a few recipes. He turned around, finding Poole staring at him, holding the axe that they used to break into the lab.

    Jekyll doesn't kill himself, but instead decides to burn his letter to Utterson and run away. Utterson finds the laboratory empty, with him losing his letter from Lanyon, so he never discovers that Henry is Hyde, and starts an investigation to find him.
