The world is cotton these days. He feels warm and light-headed when doing the most mundane things ever known to humanity—cooking, cleaning, washing, training—as long as he does them for Mizu—cooking, cleaning for Mizu’s health, washing Mizu’s clothes, training with Mizu (which always ends sooner than she’d like, but how can he help it?). He feels like they invent something even with the most innocuous of touches—a new season, perhaps, one that is even hotter than summer. He smiles to himself, unbidden, unknowing, stupid, these days. It isn’t until Mizu points it out that he catches the half-formed stretch of his lips, and, smiles wider. Anything to make Mizu smile with him, anything to make her blush, skin already pinkish.

Summary
On the ninth harvest of the peach tree, Taigen sees a ghost.
Two stingrays disturb the still of the inlet.
The ghost kneels in the firelight, back bent, head inclined in a display of deep respect for the old smith. Taigen drops all the timbers in his arms. The commotion causes the ghost to snap its head up and Taigen feels like throwing up. The blue is too much, too much. He trips over himself scrambling away for refuge.
River water hits his face, yet his skin won’t register the wetness, won’t register anything. Too many feelings swirl within him to the point they all feel like nothing. He scrubs at his face until freshwater could hide saltwater, and red nose and eyes could be excused as from friction alone.
or: Taigen waited, and waited, and waited. Like the sweet fruit after the harsh winter, it was worth the wait.

I set the fire, Mizu had confessed thickly into Taigen's ear, when their mouths were still filled with ash, eyes half-sealed with tears from acrid smoke.
Did you have a choice? Taigen had asked as a response, hauling them forward another step across a bridge, toward another life.
Mizu had fallen silent—so silent that Taigen lifted his chin in worry that he had drawn his final breath without Taigen's permission.
No, the not-samurai had told him then. I did not have a choice.
And Taigen believed it.
Fool.
