There are some happenings you just attribute to chance. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing systematic, just a slight variation from the norm every once in a while that turns into a speck of dust in large sample sizes, even if its occurrence makes you feel excited for a split second.
Yet sometimes, it’s not by chance. Sometimes, there’s a perfectly good variable that explains the deviance—and to be able to state with confidence what that reason is, brings the most delight to a scientist.
