“Happy first Pride, Evan,” his boyfriend’s nose nudges at his chin, prompting Buck to turn his head and for the first time, he notices the clock on Tommy’s nightstand. ‘12:01 AM’ it blinks at them in chunky blue font, ‘JUN 1 2024’.
Tommy doesn’t give Buck the time to laugh or moan or whimper before he’s speaking again. “After all-” Tommy pauses to lick the shell of Buck’s ear, “you’ve been such a good ally for me.”

“You keep saying that, but I don't know why,” Buck says, aiming for teasing and just sounding as concerned as he feels.
Tommy's lips press together, and he blinks right before his eyes get shiny. “My father died last week.”
Buck remembers the shocked, numb feeling that followed him for days after Bobby died. Weeks, really. But he knows Tommy had a complicated relationship with his dad, even though he rarely talked about it. Just like they rarely talked about anything.
“I'm sorry,” he says, even though it feels insufficient. “Did you eat today?”
