When Zander and his friend encountered Souler, they thought they were just being pranked by each other, and by the time they knew it was real they just couldn't take it seriously. After all, if it couldn't hurt them when they thought it was a prank, there's no way it was really dangerous. Hiccup is more dragon than human he likes to think. After killing the Red Death, he had spent almost all his time leading his nest and caring for dragons.
