Her mom handed it to her with a concerned expression, and Nancy twirled her hair tie nervously through her fingers as she put the phone to her ear. “Hello?”
“Nancy?” It was Jonathan, she’d recognize his voice anywhere. Right now it was shaking, and his words were interspersed with shallow breaths. “I’m so sorry, I don’t think I can do dinner tonight.”

Summary
There’s a knock on the door. Some part of Steve manages to dimly realize that it’s Tuesday, so Max is meant to be coming over after school. He can’t stand up. He’s pretty sure that even if he did manage it he’d pass out as soon as he took a step. Every knock feels like a knife twisted into his skull. Steve makes a sound that’s kind of like a whimper, and he can’t bring himself to feel as ashamed about it as he should.
The door is pulled open. The creak of the wood is like a gunshot. Steve wants to be sick. Max’s voice fills the room, and it’s harsh and grating against Steve’s brain, and he’s pretty sure he should be dead by now because nothing should hurt this fucking much.

Summary
Max knows that it will be hard to get Steve to forget about her. She knows that he is the type of person to give up everything for someone who doesn’t give him anything in return. But she also knows he is busy: she knows Dustin isn’t the same since Starcourt, that Robin is the partner in crime he always needed, that his job is time-consuming and his parents are still traveling and the Russians messed up his head so he can’t move without wincing.
She thinks that between all of the people he has to care for, all of the things he has to take care of, she thinks maybe she can slip through the cracks. If she really tries. If she crafts it just right.
She’s too optimistic.
