Summary
“C2 to Halo, do you copy?” A new voice said, interrupting Beatrice’s trivia game about the types of clouds in the air. Not recognizing the voice or the name, Beatrice thought it was a kid. “C2 to Halo, do you copy?” it repeated just as insistently.
“I copy,” she said, bringing her walkie talkie from her hip to her lips. “Who's Halo?” she asked.
“You are! Your balloon is big and yellow!”
Beatrice rolled her eyes. Definitely a kid, dialing into the wrong frequency. It wasn’t the first time and it wouldn’t be the last, so half exasperatedly and half gently, Beatrice clarified: “You can just call me Beatrice. Who's this?”
“Your new C2, reporting for duty, Bea!” the voice chirped.
Beatrice gave it a moment. First, to panic, then to experience discontent. “You are late.”
OR the one where Beatrice is a Hot Air Balloon pilot in a very small village called Great Haywood, and Ava crashes back into Beatrice's life like a very rough landing.

Summary
Beatrice is sleepy. Ava is sleepy. It's their first night with what remains of the OCS, and they don't know how to break it to everyone that's looking at them: they'll be sharing the same bed just like they did back in the Alps.

Summary
“I really don't,” Beatrice said over her glass of wine one afternoon at what had quickly become their favorite restaurant.
“Yes, you do. What better way to learn the Portuguese language and the culture than to date a local?”
To befriend a local, thought Beatrice as she swallowed. Camila was already her friend and after living in Lisbon for 8 years, Beatrice could very well say she was a local.
Learning the language was also not critical. Most people maintained a subscription for their Language Links. Her father's company even included a premium subscription to the translation service as a perk for everyone expected to travel around the globe as a company representative. So, while Camila continued her convincing, Beatrice did not even have to reach towards her ear to tell it that Camila was now cursing in Spanish.
Some people didn't wear their Links all the time, though. That, Beatrice discovered during the first blind date Camila sent her on. Her name was Ava.

Summary
Leaning back, Ava wrapped a hand around her chocolate shake. Cold droplets drifted into her fingers.
Only familiar with wine as a symbol of blood, she had not decided yet what the other items on the cocktail menu were. She shook her head and decided the night should be over with.
It was under the restroom’s blue light that Ava spoke to Beatrice. A fleeting glance first as she washed her hands, never expecting the woman beside her to return it. A small smile that widened as Beatrice's golden eyes fluttered amongst hers. They exchanged timid hi’s, in turn.

“You know - “ she sing-songs, “Ava has a crush on you.”
Beatrice feels her cheeks heat up and turns the key in the ignition as an excuse to duck her head. “Adults don’t have crushes.”
“Weird, ‘cause Ava’s an adult and she has a crush on you."

Summary
“Well, Ava,” Beatrice clicked her pen, “what do you have for us today?”
“Incredible story, actually,” she said and made her way to the lectern as if she had done it a million times. “I did have a great presentation ready—mind blowing, really—but I left my flash drive at my hotel, so I’m just going to wing it.”
“You’re going to…wing it?” It was the first time all day Lilith had spoken to a lecturer. “You are one of five, out of hundreds of applicants, to vie for this incredibly coveted position, and you’re going to wing it?”
“Yep!” She said with a happy clap and pressed the button to raise the projector screen. “I’m good at doing things on the fly. You could say I’m-“ she looked over her shoulder at the class, “in my element.”

Summary
Unbound for a second, Beatrice lifts her hand back up. There’s no dirt, no excuse, but she palms Ava’s face again, just to feel it, just for that special close lipped smile that graces Ava’s face again, just for her to sigh.
She removes it quickly—not quickly enough, too quickly—catching Ava’s eyes when they open again.
“Now,” Beatrice says, voice soft and serious. “Let’s try again.”
Ava nods, the halo glows, her feet leave the ground, and she doubles her time.
—
Beatrice realizes that her touch helps Ava with her training, and, well, things escalate.
