Summary
Joel wrapped her close, encasing her in his jacket and his warmth. The feeling of her body pressed to his woke the papa-bear kept dormant for too long and he gently cradled her head with his palm. “It’s okay.”
She wasn’t cargo, she hadn’t been since Henry and Sam. Since he nearly lost her the first time.
She was his daughter. His Ellie. She was everything. The earth, sun, stars, and moon all tangled in one. She was right here, in his arms. Alive.
He’d burn the entire world down for her. He hoped the careful stroking of her hair conveyed that enough.
“It’s okay baby girl. I’ve got you,” his eyes fell shut against the winter, relief running thick through his veins as he gently rocked them both. Incomprehensible groans and cries continued from the space between his collar and jaw. The sound formed a stinging lump in his throat. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you,” Joel repeated, unsure if for him or for Ellie.
They stood like that longer than was probably safe; tangled within Joel’s heavy coat together, clinging to each other like a lifeline.
