Astrid Greenwood had been alone for a long time. Not alone alone; she had colleagues she liked, acquaintances she met up with for coffee sometimes. Her and Jane caught up on the phone every few months. But all the small talk in the world couldn’t change the fact that she had gone home every night to an empty apartment, and that if that apartment had just never had anyone in it again, only a few people would’ve spared more than a sad sigh and an occasional glance at an empty desk.
There had been something freeing about the solitude of her life being her and her research. She could deal with humanity in abstracts, without ever having to look someone she’d failed in the eye. It was why she’d moved from practice into research after what had happened with Jack.
