    Bookmarker's Notes

Rewired my brain; badass Slytherin!Ginny being put in impossible situations and doing what she had to to survive; healing from trust issues (!!) and trauma

    ---

She takes one step forward and then another and another until she's running, the waves splashing and swelling against her calves and her knees and then her thighs. She falls forward as the water hits her hips, slicing through the surface, the shock of cold coursing through her body, the sea a sting of salt against her skin.

She reaches forward with her arms, pulling herself through the water. For a while, she loses herself in the rhythm of the stroke, in the tug of the ocean, her feet far above the ocean floor.

    Floating free.

When she finally climbs back out, heading up for the house, Fleur clucks her tongue over the blue of Ginny's lips as she wraps her in a towel, but doesn't say anything.

    ---

"Mum?" she asks, wanting something but not quite knowing what to ask for.

    "Yes?"

Ginny's eye is caught by the steady movement of her mum's capable hands. "Do you think you could teach me?"

Her eyebrows lift. "How to knit?"

    She nods.

Molly gives her a smile that wobbles just the slightest bit at the edges. "Of course, dear."

The feel of yarn in her fingers is unexpectedly calming. She finds a new rhythm in the click of needles and careful building of rows. The tension has to be kept in perfect equilibrium between too taut and too loose. Her first projects end up in hopeless tangles. It feels fitting.

"The trick," Molly says, "is in finding balance."

She won't ever be who she was. That's going to have to be okay.

She picks out a skein the color of the glassy, green sea, and starts again.

(pick it up, pick it all up and start again, ch.8)

    ---

"That's the thing," she says, focusing back in on him, something determined and completely unapologetic in her gaze. "I don't regret them. l'd do every single one of them again."

And there it is again, the way she is comfortable with it, but assumes he won't be. At least now he has an idea of where that's coming from. As if he needed any more reasons at all to hate everything Voldemort ever stood for.

"When it comes down to it, I think... No. I know they saved lives."

"And you don't think I'd understand that?" he asks.

    ---

"You were right," she says, trying to push on before she can think about what she's doing. "The way we did this... it never would have been enough. But protecting myself is what I do, it's how l am, and trying to be different-" She can't even breathe. "Fuck, it terrifies me. You terrify me."

His eyebrows pop up then, and she knows she's surprised him. "Me?"

"You're the scariest thing I've ever faced."

He looks absolutely horrified. "What did I-?"

"Harry," she says, knowing he doesn't understand, that he's probably already trying to blame himself somehow. But she also isn't sure how to explain it. That he offered her everything she wants, only she doesn't feel relief. She only feels blind panic. "You didn't do anything wrong."

"Then why?" he asks, frustration leaking into his voice. She shakes her head, and, fuck, maybe she can't do this. Maybe they could just go somewhere else, or do this later or-

"Ginny," Harry says, pressing, pressing, pressing, refusing to budge, and she can't hold it back any longer.

"Because l've only laid myself bare to one person in my entire life, and he nearly destroyed me," she very nearly hisses, the words so painful to say, to let out into the world.

    ---

    He does love her.

She just needs to decide if she's willing to trust that.

And maybe this is what her mum really meant, not that losing Harry would be the cost of her choices, but that if she wants to be with him, she has to be willing to risk something. To risk everything. No more exit plans, no more slivers or careful versions of herself. It's all or nothing.

All she has to decide is if Harry is worth that.

She shifts her weight, and Harry startles, his hand reflexively reaching for her. But instead of getting up and leaving, she simply turns her body so she is facing him on the bench. Her knee presses into the side of his leg as she leans closer.

"A scorpion," she says, hoping she doesn't sound quite as breathless as she feels. Harry is definitely thrown, though whether by the seeming non-sequitur or her breaking of their cardinal rule - never show obvious attention to each other in public - she doesn't know.

    "What?"

"My Patronus. It's a scorpion." She smiles self- deprecatingly. "Telling, right?"

Harry considers her. “Hard outer defenses.”

She nods, feeling emotions crawling up her throat. “Vulnerable center.”
