"The orphanage Atsushi was “raised" in, was not a warm place. It held no love for him, only a hatred and disgust Atsushi had never known the cause to. He was neglected and hurt and not a soul ever bothered to share with him a shred of kindness. So naturally, he wasn't very educated. All he knew was what he managed to teach himself from the old books that, much like him, were cast aside and forgotten. So, he didn't know anything about the world. He didn't know about sex or romance or sexualities. All he knew was literature no one remembered. Kunikida and Dazai try teaching him what he needs to know but it takes a little while for Atsushi to grasp anything. And right when he thinks he's got a pretty good understanding of the modern world, he starts hearing the people close to Akutagawa referring to him with several different pronouns.”
