For weeks after the fateful incident, Angel had drowned himself in drugs and alcohol, doing whatever he could to distract himself from the new, searing emotions he felt: the guilt, the pride, the regret, the excitement. He lived in a nonstop haze, desperate to avoid the unfamiliar humming of energy deep within his chest. Desperate to ignore the inevitable, the hundreds of souls now in his hands, the world-shattering reality he had no time to grapple with when he picked up that abandoned dagger unless he miss the opportunity he would never get again. An opportunity he didn’t even know would work, it wasn’t like Valentino told him what was in his contract, for all Angel knew, Valentino couldn’t even be killed. But that dagger slid so smoothly into Valentino’s body, his blood ran so fast that when he had dropped to the floor at Angel’s feet, there was no doubt in Angel’s mind that Valentino missed one crucial provision when he made that contract. He had underestimated Angel, something that became even more obvious with the final look of revelation in Valentino’s eyes. Angel spiraled, but what else was there to do when you were finally free and the blood was on your hands.
