“How do you define being alive?” Faruzan asked. “Karkata toes the line between a weak and a strong artificial intelligence, which is probably why its existence is so controversial in the Akademiya.” Hat Guy shifted uncomfortably. “Regardless, do you think a worm is alive? Would you care for its pronouns like you do Karkata’s? Is it intelligence, and is an artificial intelligence alive? Why does it all even matter?”
“You’re asking too many questions.”
“On the contrary, I think all of these are valid, even if we do not know the answer.”
“Then a question to you," he said. "Do you think we should treat artificially intelligent creatures as living creatures?”
Faruzan finds she enjoys her mental sparring battles (read: trash talking sessions) with a certain Hat Brat a little too much.

“It…it didn’t work.”
Wen Qing’s voice is hazy, swimming in through his ears and rolling out again with a throb. There is a pulse of agony, another thread of viscera being ripped from his lower dantian that causes his stomach to turn. Wei Wuxian clamps tighter on the stick wedged between his teeth, trying not to make any noises that might awaken Jiang Cheng.
Creaking his eyes open, Wei Wuxian sees him lying peacefully, Wen Qing’s needles doing their work and keeping him unconscious. He can never remember this part. Never see, never hear, never know.Wen Qing’s words sink in slowly, though, melting ice trickling through his brain. Around the wooden rod between his teeth, Wei Wuxian makes a pained, questioning sound. Wen Qing looks at a loss, but only for a moment. Some decision made, Wei Wuxian grunts as the woman starts to sew him up again.
But Jiang Cheng... Jiang Cheng still is opened up...
With no core placed inside him.
