    Years after the island, Maurice mourns the loss of his friendship with Roger, and everything they could have been, and maybe even were. He finds himself more often than not dozing away in his own thoughts, and ever so often, think back to everything that actually went down on the island

    He's experiencing losing time more and more the longer he went without talking about everything, but Jack won't even acknowledge the events, and he doesn't talk to none of the other former choir boys anymore

    He's losing himself, and he doesn't know if he can ever get back, or if it's too late

    What Maurice failed to understand was that Jack had found a compromise with himself, a careful balance that allowed him to indulge his desires just enough to survive them while still believing forgiveness remained within reach. He didn’t understand that, for all the affection Jack carried for him, for all the longing he buried beneath restraint and prayer, there was still something he loved more.

    Or : Jack and Maurice have a more than casual friendship but Jack keeps hurting him out of fear.
