Nerdanel watches the Ambarussa pounce at Fëanáro, crying out “Atar! Atar!” with shrill, giggling voices. Her husband’s mouth, now so often set firmly in a grimace like her stone sculptures, cracks ever-so-slightly as he greets his grandchildren with a faint, tired smile.
Yes— grandchildren, for in the corner of the room, watching with knuckles clenched as white as bone, her darling Maitimo sits observing the loving display with a look on his face like he is moments away from crumbling into ash and dust the longer he watches over the children he will never be able to acknowledge as his own.
(or: an AU wherein the Ambarussa are the sons of Maedhros rather than Fëanor and Nerdanel, why it was hidden, and how it came to be.)
