Rafael slid a finger into the knot of his tie, tugging it loose with a sigh of relief, jacket thrown carelessly over the back of the couch. He scrubbed his free hand through his hair, dragging it down his face and sighed, deep and exhausted. Both the kitchen and living room were empty, lights turned down low. He had been hoping that you might still be up, but apparently he was not so fortunate.
Tie tossed aside, he reached for a glass. He could at least have a nightcap. Something to put a period at the end of this hellishly long day.
And that’s when he heard it. He almost missed it, honestly, so deep in the relief that he was finally home. But there it was, faint, but unmistakable: a soft cry coming from the direction of the bedroom.
