Gojo’s made his way to Nanami by now, body blocks him poking around in his canvas grocery bag. “What are you making?”
“Oyakodon. There was a good deal on chicken today.”
“Do you need a grocery stipend?” asks Gojo, teasingly. He pulls out the onion and tosses it hand to hand before dropping it deftly back in its place.
Nanami takes the handles before he can do more damage to his produce. “There’s no reason not to take advantage of a sale when I see one.”
“Either way,” says Gojo, and then suddenly he’s reaching for Nanami, hands along the planes of his face and mouth squarely against his for just a moment, “that doesn’t sound complicated. So we have time.”

“Pretty confident for a pipsqueak.” Satoru ruffles his hair, not that it needs his help with the tousling. The kid looks positively aggravated. “I know you, too, as it happens. Fushiguro Megumi.”
His eyes are the color of his father’s, carved jade though thankfully still lacking that hard edge that Satoru sometimes sees in some of the only afterimages that can still reach him as nightmares. “Yeah.”
“Do you live around here? … I want to talk to you about something.”
“Why?” Megumi isn’t so much suspicious now as he is angry, or at the very least irritated. “My dad says I shouldn’t tell people my address.”

It keeps him awake that night, more than anything else: why does Megumi want to leave? He loves Kugisaki, Yuuji, no matter what he tries to convince anyone else of. He’s spent almost nineteen years under Satoru’s own sometimes-watchful eye, what would make him want out? Is he tired of Satoru? Had his words earlier been serious? No, that can’t be it. He tries to settle into his mattress, shifting over nonexistent lumps.
It’ll be fine, he thinks. Most kids, the ones born without an intergenerational malediction carved in their hearts, do this as an almost-expectation. They don’t abandon their old lives or the people in them just because they get a degree. Megumi won’t either.

“Megumi, you’re like the son I never had so I’m going to give you my best advice.” This is patently untrue; Fushiguro is like a barnacle on the smooth beautiful side of the ship that is Gojo’s life, he is like a freeloader who has robbed Gojo of some of Yaga’s attention, some of Nanami’s and Hoshi’s and Ieiri’s in his last few years in an unforgiving and demanding sport, but he’ll take the tips anyway. It’s not like he has many other people to get them from, certainly not in any kind of traditional family arrangement. Gojo turns to face him, doesn’t make a move to leave the little three-wall room where the machines are. “Stop thinking about other people as being above or below you. In fact, stop thinking about anyone but yourself. You are your own competition, your own opponent. To boil it down, Megumi: be selfish.”

They don’t have time but they don’t act like it, with Satoru’s artificial extension. A month and a half as a phrase feels long but as a chronological span it is vanishingly short. It’s all full circle, life resetting back to what it was, Satoru chasing Suguru and wanting him in whatever way he can have him. Same day of death, taken over body retrieved and burnt in one overwhelming funeral pyre. He tells the kids he’ll win, he tells her he’ll lose. Nothing matters, Okkotsu has things in hand, his time and his role are over. It’s all bullshit but he doesn’t drink so she can’t tell him that, not as honestly as she’d like, on an even footing.
