“Why’re you so against makin’ friends?” Joel asks from behind her, and her hands freeze in the middle of pulling off a shoe. “There’s plenty of nice kids here in Jackson.”
“Don’t need friends,” Ellie says flatly. She tosses the shoe toward their designated spot by the door, followed by the other, fully ignoring the disgruntled noises Joel makes when she leaves them in a haphazard pile.
“Sure you do, kiddo.” His hands rest on his hips, brows pulled together in that look of concern that Ellie’s entirely too familiar with. “It’s good for you, havin' friends to hang out with and stuff.”
