Rolling in his seat, Macau put his head on Nop’s good leg as he threw his arms out, clearly bored. “If you aren’t going to train Hia, who is?”
“No one,” Vegas snapped, motioning for Macau to sit up and not use their injured guard as a pillow. “Pa’s men are too messy. I’ll just wait for Nop to get better.”
Nop gave Vegas a look, his eyes darting to Macau as if to remind Vegas that he didn’t have time to waste.
“Don’t worry, Khun Vegas,” Nop said with a scary grin. “I think I know just the man. I’ll have to convince your father, but he’s perfect–scariest guy I know in the business.”

17-year-old Vegas is rebellious and a complete failure in his father's eyes, so when Nop gets injured, they look to the main family for someone to train Vegas.

“Yes, Khun Vegas.”
Vegas takes a slow breath in and Pete lets himself look up from where he’s been staring at the floor in front of him. It’s usually safest when in the presence of the minor family.
“Call me sir,” Vegas slips into English, and Pete is thankful for the half dozen years of English he took in school and the years of lessons he’s had since. He understands the words though he’s not sure why Vegas wants him to call him anything other than his proper title.
He’s given up on wondering overly much about Vega’s motivations.
“Yes, sir.” Pete even mimics Vegas’s English, tapping his fingers against his thigh anxiously as Vegas continues eyeing him up and down.Bookmarked by Mintin

Summary
The attack against the Italians doesn't go as planned. While they manage to kill Don, they didn't account for other members of the family getting involved. Most everyone makes it out, but Pete and Vegas end up captured, chained up together in some concrete basement.
Being held hostage with only Vegas for company is less than ideal. It's too quiet there, and Pete can’t seem to take his own thoughts or the nervous heat that has been growing in him whenever he is around Vegas.
