    Summary

The mute crash of the ground against Finley’s side held a long, trembling chord, screaming out a bruise against her ribs. The silence swallowed all sense, till the ringing in her ears said a great clamour had spawned it. Understanding she didn’t realise she’d lost trickled back in. She forced herself to open her eyes.

The world was sideways. Smoke filled the air, and the air itself shone amber-gold as magic, free of crystal and witch, burnt and dissipated. Her cheek was cold, wet, pressed to the snow the illusion had not melted.

People moved around her. Someone grabbed her shoulder, shaking her. Finley could not parse what was before her, what the strange, hulking shape laid at the ruins of the twin columns was. Bringing up a trembling hand, she wiped at her face.

    Snow, dirt, and blood.

    Summary

“About that,” Vi says. “How’d you end up here? What did a girl like you do to get tossed into this two-star shithole?”

“Really? That’s how you ask? No subtlety in it?”

“Uh, yeah? I saved you from getting shanked in the shower, so fair’s fair. What’s your deal, topside?”

“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”

Half a decade into Vi's stay in Stillwater, a topsider turns up, raving about being a Councillor's daughter.

    Summary

Miorine has sat there, hour after endless hour, fingers knitted together, unfocused eyes drifting to the black of space that does not betray how many days have passed. When she was out there in the depths, in the endless dark beyond the glass and steel that protects them from its thoughtless wrath, she had been so certain it was all for nothing. The glass of Suletta’s helmet was clouded, the oxygen no longer circulating as it should, and she had not responded no matter how Miorine screamed and shook her.

Miorine’s heart had not broken because it could not beat. Not until Suletta whimpered, twitched, mumbled through parted lips, and now all Miorine hears is the drumming of her own pulse in her ears.

Suletta’s eyes haven’t flickered open since.

    ---

Suletta's recovery is to be the work of the rest of her life. Miorine watches over her, keeping vigil, and Ericht offers unlooked for support. A glimpse into the months following the events of Quiet Zero.

    Summary

Caitlyn Kiramman, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-six years in the world with only the Hund sisters to distress or vex her. Or, wait—It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single Kiramman in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of the newly hired groundskeeper.

    *

Regency-adjacent AU: after the loss of both her father and the family groundskeeper, Caitlyn is summoned to her home estate from the questionable pleasures of town. Rumours abound of the unsavoury sort taken on at the Kiramman estate, and Caitlyn finds herself face-to-face with a woman she has not seen that last decade.

    Summary

“You’re drunk? Shit, you’re hammered and you’re pointing a fucking shotgun at me,” the intruder says. Her steely eyes gleam like the necklace tucked away in her jeans, and Caitlyn knows there are a dozen stories behind them. “Look. I’m not gonna hurt you, okay? There’s a reason I chose tonight to come topside. Everyone’s supposed to be at that Council party, and I figured this place would be an easy mark. You need better security, Cupcake. Took me three minutes to get over the gate, up the wall, and through your bedroom window.”

    *

Caitlyn's long-since settled into a socially advantageous marriage and is excellent at appearing satisfied with her lot in life. Her first act of rebellion in years - skipping the grandest gala of the season - puts her in the path of Vi, a Zaunite with debts to pay and scores to settle.

    Summary

“That’s what I thought. Why can’t you be honest with me, Vi?” Caitlyn demands. “Why can you not tell the truth the first time? Imagine my surprise when I opened my drawer, doing you the favour of thinking of you, and found that my favourite toy was missing. Well. My second favourite toy.”

    “Look, if—”

Caitlyn snaps her fingers. She actually snaps her fucking fingers and Vi falls silent. She doesn’t know who this woman thinks she is, doesn’t understand how Caitlyn Kiramman gets her brain to stop firing with a few scattered insulations and a scowl in her voice. Vi slides a leg along the mattress, trying to centre herself.

    Summary

“So,” Caitlyn starts, a little rehearsed, like she might be nervous, too. “I have to know. What kind of bet do you have to lose to end up at a community crocheting class on a Tuesday evening?”

Vi slumps in her seat, considering her options. She can come up with a story on the fly, that’s no challenge, but she’s always found lying the least interesting form of conversation. Lifting her straw from her drink and shaking the last stubborn drops off, Vi dumps it on the table and takes a few swigs directly from the cup.

    Summary

Moving from the bustling capital city of Piltover to a village in the middle of nowhere wasn't on the cards for Caitlyn Kiramman, and purchasing a Bed & Breakfast certainly wasn't part of her life plan. Nor was meeting a baker who could sling her over her shoulder like a sack of flour, but here they are.

    Summary

She has traced Vi’s scars with her fingers and lips, innumerable, uncounted, and knows that so few are from fair fights; she sees the way Vi always rolls her right shoulder, stiff from a poorly-fixed dislocation, and knows that whatever supposed crime Vi has been unjustly punished for has been visited upon her ten times in kind.

Caitlyn’s chest aches. She wishes she could make her mother understand. She wishes she didn’t have to defend Vi; she wishes someone had defended her all those years ago.

    Summary

“Please, Caitlyn,” Vi whispers. The levity doesn’t last long. She’s begging, pleading, holding the glass an inch from Caitlyn’s dry, cracked lips. “I need you to—shit, I just need you. Everything’s so fucked up. I’ve come back to a world I wish I didn’t recognise, and everything’s gone. Everything and everyone. And then you, you appeared out of nowhere, like there’s still some good left in this shitty, uncaring world, and I just—please. Just a sip. For me?”

Caitlyn’s eyes focus on the still water within the glass. Vi presses the chipped rim to Caitlyn’s mouth and tilts it back, water touching her lips, and Caitlyn finally moves.

Lifting a hand, she knocks the glass across the room. It shatters into three large pieces and a thousand tiny shards.

Vi lifts her hands. She wants to curl them into fists, to beat the ground, to twist them in her hair and scream; she wants to cradle Caitlyn’s face, letting her feel the gentle warmth on the dirt covering her skin, and the skin beneath the dirt.

Caitlyn holds her gaze, daring Vi to touch her.

    Summary

“You’re late tonight, Cupcake,” Vi says.

“Ah. Yes. Indeed—well! You understand how Council meetings are. The more tedious and unimportant, the greater their determination to run through the night,” Caitlyn says, stepping behind the counter and reclaiming her bag. “And—shopping! I thought we’d better stock up before we found ourselves utterly bereft of food. I got your favourites, actually. I could make you dinner tonight?”

The offer hangs in the air. Caitlyn’s face is flushed, but Vi doesn’t question her. There’s no fun in trying to pry out whatever Caitlyn’s hiding; she always gives in too easily.

    “Uh-huh,” Vi says.

“Right. Right. I’ll just—sorry to disturb you.”

    Summary

Rummaging through her pockets, Vi finds one of Powder’s hairpins. She bends it out, only meaning to kill time, but ends up crouched in front of the lock, making a real go of it.

“What do you think you’re doing?” a man’s voice booms from behind her.

“Breaking into a rich girl’s place.” Vi clicks her tongue, concentration lost. “Mind your own business.”

“Call the police. Now,” a woman’s voice joins.

Sighing, Vi pushes herself to her feet and says, “Calm down. My girlfriend lives here.”

She turns, jerks her thumb at the door, and freezes. Before her are two strangers she’s caught glimpses of dozens of times: Caitlyn’s mother and father, caricatures of their own photographs. Vi can’t tell if it’s disbelief or horror on their faces, or if it’s worth discerning between the two. Caitlyn’s mother holds out her phone, thumb hovering over 9.

    “Shit,” Vi says.

    Summary

The woman at the bar has been pretending not to watch Vi for the last hour. Usually, Vi would be the last person to object – the woman is around her age, with sharp, focused eyes and a mouth Vi would love to get a begrudging smile out of – but it isn’t the first time she’s seen her. Not just in The Last Drop, either. The woman always has that same, calculated focus, and is constantly glancing down to write in the notebook she always carries.

    Summary

A week later, she is back amongst the Petrified Islands. Kassandra makes some excuse about a damaged hull or restocking, and if she looks at the map sideways and squints, Chios is the closest island.

The crew scatter, off to spend their wages, and Kassandra sits on the edge of the Adrestia, legs hanging off the side. Returning to the island is a bad enough idea, and heading north will leave her in an unmarked grave. Kassandra looks at the spear at her hip and frowns. So much of her life has spelt certain death for her, but if being thrown from a mountain didn’t stop her, this might not, either.
