Summary
Haunted by the horrors of his past, a disfigured musical genius named Sherlock seeks refuge from the world far beneath the Paris opera house. "It will have the Wen, though?"
Lan Wangji paused for a moment before walking, faster this time.
"For their protection," he answered. "Yes."Three days after Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian walk around Yiling, Lan Wangji comes to arrest the Wen into Lan custody.

He certainly doesn't expect San Lang, the bold and spirited young man he encounters on the way, who seems determined to raise Xie Lian’s standards /for/ him, who somehow has all the gossip on the island resort they’re both going to— as well as its notorious owner, Hua Cheng.
Maybe 'unexpected' is exactly what Xie Lian needs.

"Pop some bread in the toaster for me?” Wei Ying asks. Lan Zhan has one, a chrome thing with dials and buttons.
A pause. “This isn’t a relationship,” Lan Zhan says.
Wei Ying blinks. It’s such an incongruous thing to say. At first his brain says, that must be code. It’s almost like listening to two spies talk in a drama. The handler would say something like ‘the duck swims at midnight,’ and the spy would say, ‘purple is the loveliest colour’ and they’d both nod to each other and know that the prime minister was about to be assassinated, or something. That’s all he can think of, at first. Because of course this isn’t a relationship? This was a fun night. So Lan Zhan must be saying this for a reason. There’s some response he’s supposed to make now, but he’s lost the script if he ever had it.
“Okay…” he says. Then it clicks. Lan Zhan means: you should leave.

Summary
Our tale begins with Xie Lian hiring an escort to help him deal with an “unspeakable affliction” after a disastrous breakup forced him to leave college and return to his hometown.
Hua Cheng (or Wuming, as he is called when we first meet him) isn’t really interested in helping people—he just wants to get paid. If the situation with a client seems too complicated to deal with, he has no problem walking away. But for some reason he can’t explain, he feels compelled to help Xie Lian.
The two find themselves very quickly drawn to one another, but nothing in life is easy, especially when it comes to love.
Xie Lian is struggling to forget about the demise of the relationship that ruined his life—a struggle complicated by the fact that his ex may or may not be stalking him.
Meanwhile, Hua Cheng is busy running from a past that will soon catch up to him with deadly consequences.

A moment later, there was a short rustling before it went quiet.
Hua Cheng's demeanor was more upsetting than the rustling leaves. The sound could have come from anything, but Hua Cheng had a very blank expression on his face. The oppressive weight that Xie Lian had so briefly felt began to creep over the forest floor. It rose up like water, wading up their knees, torsos, and up to their heads.
Xie Lian stepped toward Hua Cheng, reaching out a hand to touch his arm. For some reason, he felt like he had to stop him from going after that feeling, or maybe it was an urge to keep him nearby.
When Xie Lian’s fingers touched the skin of Hua Cheng's wrist, he turned to look down at him. His eyes most certainly were red.

Xie Lian is a prince of a city whose people are being tormented by an unknown, unseen beast. Seeking new lands to run to, Xie Lian begins a small village in the woods, hoping to prepare to move his people away from the dreaded forest outside of their walls. There, he meets Hua Cheng, who seems just a little off from human.
