Stanley había pasado décadas aprendiendo a quedarse quieto. Había sido soldado el tiempo suficiente para dominar el arte de la paciencia, la disciplina de esperar durante tramos interminables de aburrimiento el momento exacto, perfecto, para apretar un gatillo. Había sobrevivido emboscadas sin inmutarse, interrogatorios sin quebrarse, operaciones en las que una sola respiración equivocada habría significado la muerte.
Nada de ese entrenamiento lo había preparado para la agonía exquisita de ver al Dr. Xeno Houston Wingfield vivo y respirando y ahí, y no poder agarrarlo por el cuello de ese abrigo ridículo, arrastrarlo a algún lugar privado y besarlo hasta que a ninguno de los dos le quedara memoria de su propio nombre.
Por desgracia, la civilización tenía otros planes.

He'd been a soldier long enough to master the art of patience, the discipline of waiting through endless stretches of boredom for the precise, perfect moment to pull a trigger. He'd survived ambushes without flinching, interrogations without breaking, operations where one wrong breath would have meant death.
None of that training—none of it—had prepared him for the exquisite agony of seeing Dr. Xeno Houston Wingfield alive and breathing and right there, and not being able to grab him by the collar of that ridiculous coat and drag him somewhere private and kiss him until neither of them remembered their own names.
Unfortunately, civilization had other plans.
