    Summary

Tarquin had never considered himself the sort who was suited for change. Even change for the better. He was better suited toward keeping his head down, protecting his own, and staying out of trouble. He had to. Minrathous was a cesspit and nothing he could do would change that. He believed in that, if nothing else.

Then the damned, handsome Chantry Brother decided to show up in his archives like a stray cat.

    Summary

As one whose entire career focused on dealing with the dead, Emmrich Volkarin wasn’t a stranger to scars. Yet it had been a while since Emmrich had been around an exposed body that wasn’t freshly deceased; or more likely than not, so decomposed that barely any tissue lingered on the remaining pale bone. That had to be the reason, he assured himself, that he reacted how he did upon seeing Rook’s scars.

    - or -

Emmrich sees Rook's scars for the first time. While he doesn't react well the first time, he's determined to make this right.

    Summary

The knocking on the door doesn't even startle him. Has expected it the moment he has shown himself in the Omi headquarters. A living ghost, judging by the looks he got. Or maybe he’s been expecting it since he set foot into this town. Maybe he has hoped for the knock, even. And still, he considers not opening.
Another set of knocks follows. Loud and harsh and violent. Followed by "Kiryu-chan, I know you're in there." The all too familiar voice with the mocking singsong in it. It sounds more like a threat than it ever has before.

    Summary

“Xiongzhang,” Wangji choked out, sliding to the ground in front of Xichen. “I love him. He is the other half of my soul.”

    Oh. No. Oh, no.

The Beifeng, that mighty empire of the north, invaded more than a year ago, moving inexorably south and east, toppling the cities of Qinghe and Qishan, and now wait, camped outside of Lanling.

In order to buy peace, the chief of the Lan clan has given the Beifeng warlord a gift, his second oldest son in marriage.

However, he did not consult his oldest son, and when Xichen finds out that his brother has been given away, as though he was no more than a vase or painting, he makes a plan. He, too, can give a gift, and he will not regret it.

What he finds with the Beifeng, with the warlord, with the people he meets, and within himself, is not at all what he expects.

    Summary

Wei Wuxian is staring up at the sky, thinking idly about the taste of Emperor’s Smile on his tongue, when Suibian jumps full force onto his stomach and cries, “A-Xian, don’t be mad!”

The sheer force of her pounce knocks the breath out of him. The resulting pause is just long enough for Jiang Cheng, who up to this point has been laying rather peacefully next to him, to shoot up and demand, “Oh great, what did you do now?”

To be fair, the question isn’t exactly unwarranted. Suibian looks an absolute mess: twigs stuck in her fur, dirt smeared across the white fluff of her underbelly. She’s panting up a storm, little heh heh heh gasps that haven’t edged into her normal high-pitched laughter. When her ears press back against her head, she could almost pass for pitiful.

    “Bichen hates me.”

Wei Wuxian’s first thought is Why would Lan Zhan’s daemon hate you?, but it’s followed quickly by remembering exactly where he is, how little trouble he’s caused today, and the fact that he hasn’t seen Suibian for a few minutes.

A grin spreads across his face.

(Or: The most important name a cultivator will ever pick isn’t for their sword. It’s for their daemon.)
