Aerion knew his father was right in some ways; he hadn't been giving them his best, and his current slump was affecting their image and his own mental health. But there was something in his heart that told him that this case could be the one to ignite the passion he needed to continue in this field. He looked at Arlan; the kid was glassy-eyed and looking at the floor. The poor boy made Aerion realize that he knew better than anyone else what it felt like to be caged with nowhere else to turn, to be kicked down so badly that he'd grasp at anything for help.
"I'll do it. I'll defend Duncan Pennytree." Aerion cut off his father mid-rant. "And I'll fucking win."
