Caitlyn Kiramman wasn’t just rich. Her mom sat on the university board, and her brother Jayce was the same Jayce who had once pulled Vi out of a mess that should have gotten him expelled, maybe arrested. Vi still didn’t know why Jayce had helped him, only that seeing the Kiramman name again made his stomach drop.
One bad trick left him three thousand dollars in debt for Caitlyn’s laptop. Now he owed the Kiramman family twice over.
And yeah, they definitely had the money. Caitlyn could have replaced it without blinking. She chose not to. She chose to make him pay.
That was the part that bothered him most.

“Lieutenant Lane,” Caitlyn says, calm enough that everyone else could sense she was faking it, “hold your position.”
Vi scoffs, voice dripping with attitude. “You really gonna babysit me the whole way, Captain?”
Heat creeps up Caitlyn’s neck, her cheeks flushing beneath the helmet as her grip tightens on the handle. She swallows hard, forces her breathing steady, and keeps her eyes forward.
“Hold. Your. Position, Lieutenant” she repeats, sharper this time, and the silence that follows on the radio is excruciating, but also something completely usual for them by now.

Captain Caitlyn Kiramman is assigned to lead Top Gun team on a mission that shouldn’t be survivable, but it is by a notch. Violet Lane is one of her pilots: reckless, brilliant, and deeply resentful of the Kiramman name. Vi leaned back on her hands, tone cautiously casual. “Can I ask you somethin’?” Her next question had been on her mind for a few months now and over the last two weeks, it was getting harder to ignore.
“You may,” Caitlyn answered, the fabric of her cape rippling in the wind, as if to signal her curiosity.
“What’s it like to fly?” Vi broke out into a grin, mirroring the hovering woman's own sudden smile. It was one that showed a hint of a gap in her front teeth.
“Shouldn’t you know, Ms. Jumper?” her voice had that, playful, teasing quality to it again. Vi let out a loud laugh while crossing her ankles.
“Please never call me that again and I don’t fly. I fall, with style." Caitlyn chuckled before tilting her head in thought, searching for the proper words to describe it.
“Honestly… it feels like pure freedom,” she finally landed on.
“It really looks like it,” Vi said softly.Or:
