Then I’m gonna smile at you with my charming smile and you’re gonna blush. When I do something stupid, you’re gonna make fun of me for it with your dry sense of humor that I don’t seem to understand and I’m gonna counter it with a quick jab. But remember- we gotta smile. If we can’t like each other, we’re gonna convince the press we’re practically in love.”

Summary
It's early in the morning when Max receives a weird message on his phone "You are gonna make Charles win the race on Sunday, or he dies". Max dismisses it at first, choosing not to fall for the joke, scam, or whatever it was.
But the messages continue through the whole week, attached with various pictures of Charles, taken from a distance. Charles walking in public, Charles training, Charles sleeping. Pictures that were nowhere on the internet or in magazines, he checked.
Come Saturday night and the news reports someone has broken into Charles's hotel room and stolen just one thing: his bracelets. Sunday morning, those bracelets appear in Max's backpack.
The race arrives and Max is certain the threats are probably serious.
