    Wei Wuxian dies at twenty-two and doesn’t come back. Lan Wangji dies in an “unfortunate accident” in a temple in Yunping at thirty-seven. The world moves on.

    Thousands of years later, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan have a senior thesis in cultivation to co-write on the Yiling Patriarch. It doesn’t go exactly how they were expecting.

    “I still do not understand why you were able to read the journal in the first place,” Lan Zhan says.

    Wei Ying grins. “You’ll laugh,” he says. He won’t, of course. Lan Zhan doesn’t laugh. But maybe he can swing a smile. “It’s because of the name thing. He wrote his name into the scrambling talisman. So it says that no one can undo the lock but Wei Ying.” He hooks a thumb at himself.

    Everyone’s always said his name is unlucky. This is the first time it’s worked out in his favor. It’s not a coincidence either; apparently his mother thought it would be funny. Mrs. Yu had told him that with a curl in her lip, as if it didn’t make him wish he knew his parents even more.

    A self-recorded interview with Groom #1, Wei Ying, 34, "Mr. Looking for An Adventure." The morning of the wedding. Wei Ying is in a hotel bed, his long hair in disarray as he looks directly into the screen.

    Wei Ying: "Good morning! It's my wedding day! I'm so nervous! I have, like, so many expectations, you know? And at the same time, I have no idea what to expect. I mean, by the end of the day, I'm going to be married, and I have no clue who I'm even marrying." (Pause. Wei Ying licks his lips nervously, smile dropping off a little bit.) "What if he doesn't like me? What if I'm a disappointment? I mean, listen, I know I'm a catch, but you just never know, do you? And what if he's a disappointment? What then?"

    “Did you break the ward to come in?” Lan Wangji asks, point-blank. He has his sword out and pointed at Wei Wuxian, no bothering with niceties like hello I’m Lan Wangji, and you are?

    Wei Wuxian eyes the sword, but doesn’t react. He keeps lazing back on the roof, casually drinking his wine, as if this is the usual way he meets new people. (And maybe it is! I don’t know your life, Wei Wuxian!)

    Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian meet on Season 8 of The Cultivation World. Ouyang Zizhen writes the recaps.

    “New idea,” Jin Zixuan says, appearing out of nowhere as soon as Lan Zhan sets one foot in the door. “Garden landscaping—Yanli’s always complaining about how terrible and overgrown her backyard is. I could redo it, plant some flowers, maybe even dig a pond—”

    “Have you been lying in wait to ask me that all day?” Lan Zhan interrupts to ask. “Also: no. Do not dig Yanli a pond.”

    “Why not?” Jin Zixuan says. “Don’t you think it’s a good idea? Yanli’s always saying how much she misses the lake near her parents’ house—it would be a little piece of home!”

    Lan Zhan thinks of Wei Ying. He wonders if Wei Ying misses the lake too. Whether he might like a pond.

    Jin Zixuan is hopeless when he has a crush. It turns out that Lan Zhan is even worse.

    Right when he finishes signing his name on the last page, he hears someone call out, “Mo Xuanyu?”

    The familiarity of the voice gives him a strange tingle in the ear, almost like a tickle, which then turns into a full-body shudder when he looks up to see the face of the speaker.

    In a split-second decision, he swiftly removes the red ribbon in his hair and stuffs it deep inside his shorts pocket. Forcing his wide-open mouth shut, he raises his hand and tries to sound as unsuspicious as possible when he answers, “Yeah that’s me!”

    Oh god this can’t be good. Of all the physical therapists he could have been sent to, it just had to be Lan fucking Zhan.

    (Or, Wei Wuxian wakes up from a 13-year coma as Mo Xuanyu and is referred to his best friend Lan Wangji for physical therapy. Therapist-patient relationship gets a little ~unprofessional~)
