“Please, Reki?”
Langa was still holding onto his hand, tight enough to keep him from reflexively pulling away. About 99% of Reki’s brainpower was occupied with the task of analyzing the warmth of Langa’s fingers and the pressure of his grip, and the remaining 1% whirred and stalled like an old computer trying to run a program that had outpaced its processing power. Reki was left floundering, searching for something to say in answer.
“Please,” Langa said again, more softly this time. He squeezed Reki’s hand. “I thought more about what it must’ve been like for you to see me fall off that bridge tonight. I think I fell for a long time. I wasn’t scared then, because you were there with me… but when I think about how worried you must have been… I feel worried, too.”
Reki’s heart squeezed painfully inside his chest.
“No, Langa... everything’s fine now. I don’t want you to feel worried.”
“Then don’t sleep on the floor. Please.”
Reki swallowed. Langa’s expression was calm, but his eyes were pleading. He was afraid. They both were.
“Okay,” Reki murmured. “I won’t.”
