Toph didn't ask. She was good at not asking. But Sokka was already moving toward her, phone in hand, his energy shifted into something brighter and more electric than it had been a second ago.
"It's Suki," he said, and there it was, that name, that girl, that entire four-year-long relationship that existed in the space between them like a third person at the table. "She just texted me. It's our four-year anniversary tomorrow."
Toph's mouth went dry.
She was good at hiding things. She was excellent at hiding things. But for just a moment, just a fraction of a second, something in her chest cracked open like an egg, and all the yolk spilled out onto the floor where nobody was supposed to see it.
She swallowed it down. Pushed it back. Locked it up.
By the time Sokka finished reading the text and looked back at her, she'd already assembled her face into something that looked fine. Something that looked normal. Something that looked like a best friend who was happy for him.
The performance was easy. She'd been practicing it for years.

made this skin over a couple days; it won't look good on mobile or with creator's style disabled but the html is pretty easy to customise!
