Summary

Years later, a mysterious pirate from the West known as the Owlet sneaks onto the Boiling Isles with her crew, snatches the petrified remains of the Owl Lady and kidnaps Augustus Porter. Swearing vengeance, Lilith Clawthorne sets sail with her protégé Amity Blight, with Willow Park talking her way aboard to save Gus.
Now, Amity, Willow, Lilith, Boscha and Skara have infiltrated the Pirate Republic of Nassaul on the hunt for Gus and the Owlet; but they don't realize that the two are well aware they are coming, while Salty's Wild Witches come to a drastic agreement in order to save Viney, and all the while the Royal Navy of the West Sea draws closer...

"Well, if we wanna learn from the witches of the old ages, then we have to go to where the first witches came from. We'll have to go to... The Tainted Island, Necrozia!" she said in a deep voice, accompanied by Gus running over and flicking the light switch, plunging the room into darkness and shining a red spotlight over Viney.
"Oooooooo, ominous," Luz said with awe. "Gimme the deets. I'm ready for some backstory!"
"Alright, so-" Viney stopped, quietly clearing her throat. "Gus, you can stop with the dramatic lighting now." A moment later, the red spotlight disappeared. Viney waited a few seconds longer. "Oh my Titan, I am going to throw my shoe at you Gus. Turn the normal lights back on too ya dingus."

Summer has just about come to an end, which means a few things for Luz, most of which she'd rather not think about, and her attempts at finding a way to make a portal to the Human Realm so far have all led to dead ends. Desperate to make it back and let her mom know she's okay, Luz ventures to an island that even Belos won't touch, in hopes of learning more about ancient and wild magic.

Amity's had a lot of time to think as well, and hearing from Luz the full story of what happened at the Conformatorium that day has made it clear that the plans for her future are in need of changing.
While those two start to realize what those closest to them already seemed to know, the Emperor is working tirelessly to prepare for the Day of Unity. And when his trusted spy brings to his attention a rather interesting development, he realizes there may be a big hole in his plans that he's overlooked... and he knows exactly who he needs to fix it.

“So.” Edric had taken one side, forcing Jerbo to take a step closer to Viney, who’d been stepping back in an attempt to ease herself away from Emira leering in on the other side. “You guys got any plans after school today?”
“Because we’re free.” At this point Emira had winked at Viney and that alone had been enough to activate her fight or flight instinct. “And if you’re free you should come hang with us.”
It didn’t sound as much an invitation as it did a threat.

Luz comes up with the perfect plan to introduce her mom to magic. Truly, it’s perfect. She’ll introduce her to Eda in the human world, and then, when her mom trusts her, Eda will be the one to prove to Camila that magic is real, because while her mom might think the Boiling Isles are part of Luz's imagination, surely she won't doubt another adult.
Eda, thinking there's little she wouldn't do if it means she can keep Luz by her side, goes along with it. After all, what could go wrong?
