If King didn’t find out what Fjord had done directly from him, he’d probably get one of the girls to tell him anyway. Fjord weighed the merits of letting that happen. He’d been sort of getting the impression that Kingsley respected him, so far. If he was going to lose that, it might as well be his own doing.

Caleb looked at him with surprise morphing into longing, teetering on the cliff’s edge of decision. Essek watched the shift in the set of his jaw as he settled.
