Had Odysseus… abandoned him? Surely not. Surely Odysseus wouldn’t just leave him behind… Would he? Why? Why ever would he leave his best friend for dead? Why would the rest of the crew allow him to? Polites knew he was well liked, he kept a friendship with almost every man on the ship. So why? Why leave him behind in a cyclops’ cave to die? Had he done something wrong? Had he upset Odysseus by accident? Was it because of the Lotus Eaters? Was it because he had led them to the cyclops?
But… surely Odysseus would not leave him for dead for that. Right?
Polites watched the isle of Ithica grow closer and closer on the horizon as they approached. He would get his answers soon enough.---
In which Polites is thought dead and left behind, manages to get home long before Odysseus, accidentally infiltrates the royal family and adopts the crown prince.
