Summary
The battle for Erebor has been won and the dust has settled. It's enough that everyone lived to tell the tale. Isn't it?
In the east, Fili, the new Crown Prince of Erebor, struggles to find his place in a world where his brother isn't by his side. He scours the lands, knowing that every orc nest he finds is one less threat to Middle-earth, exasperating Thorin with his single-mindedness and wrestling with his guilt and anger.
All he wants is to see Kili one more time. Surely, that isn't too much to ask for?
In the west, far from the big brother he worships, Kili carves out a place for himself and Ness amongst the hobbits. Looking forwards and not back isn't easy, and he's a big enough dwarf to admit to himself that he doesn't always manage it, but it was the price to pay for falling in love, and he'd pay it a hundred times over if he had to.
He's happy, and no one could ever ruin his happiness. But if he sometimes rides to the borders of the Shire and looks to the east, hoping to hear his brother's voice on the wind...well, isn't that perfectly understandable?
