Summary
When Ellie has to stay with Tommy & Maria while Joel is away on a long-distance patrol she finds it hard to cope with his absence despite her best efforts to be the capable and responsible almost-adult she knows she is. Dealing with this, as well as a bully in her school class leads her to make a dangerous choice. Tommy steps up in Joel's absence and disciplines her, but inadvertently makes Ellie feel like she's not really his niece, just an unexpected burden.
Can Ellie hold it together long enough for Joel to get back, or will the emotional shrapnel from her punishment leave permanent damage to the Miller family?
And will she ever be able to show Brendan-fucking-Walker just who he's messing with?
Or, Joel goes on patrol. While he's away Ellie tries to show up a classroom bully by doing some dangerous shit, but gets caught by Tommy, who spanks her in Joel's place. She begins to feel like Tommy doesn't actually love her as an Uncle like he says he does. Angst ensues. Miller men remain incapable of really saying what they feel.

Summary
It's mid-fall in Jackson and, a few months after successfully creating a cure with the Fireflies, Joel and Ellie are still settling into their new life as a family.
Ellie struggles with matching the lessons she learned and experiences she had growing up a FEDRA kid, with understanding her feelings about living in Jackson, and her relationship with Joel. Joel just wants her to be happy and safe but doesn't know how to always make that happen. Neither of them have a clue how to properly express what they're thinking, frequently jumping to conclusions and, consequently, completely missing the point.
Shit really hits the fan when Ellie breaks a really big rule, which means Joel has to discipline her in a way he doesn't want to, a way he knows will scare her. Both of them struggle with the emotional fallout of this, and Ellie runs away. Will Joel and Tommy be able to find her in time, and even if they do, will each of them be able to get past their own emotional barriers and fix what's broken between them?

Summary
Ellie & Joel are making their way from Jackson to find the Fireflies. The consequences of their fight in Jackson remain unspoken. Joel contemplates how undeserving he is of Ellie's apparent forgiveness while Ellie, being Ellie, finds a way to test the new dynamic between them.
She breaks an important rule, but then attempts to persuade Joel that the rules, and also the punishment for breaking those rules, no longer apply. Joel has to find the right words to persuade her otherwise.

Summary
Ellie is now 21 years old, all grown up and moved out of Joel's house in Jackson to live with her pregnant girlfriend, Dina. Joel is adjusting to her not being in their shared home, as well as the prospect of becoming a Grandpa. But he's concerned that Ellie seems to be taking on too much work and responsibility, for reasons he suspects have something to do with his advancing age. When he finds her curled up in his bed, upset about something she has done but reluctant to own up to it he has to use all his parenting skills and tactics to force her to confront her feelings. Even if it means putting her over his knee to do it.

Summary
Ellie and Joel are walking through the snowy forests of Wyoming, getting closer to their goal of finding Tommy. Joel is having panic attacks as his anxiety rises. Ellie tries to help with tasks like hunting and map reading, but Joel refuses to let her.
One night Ellie messes up big-time, and Joel is conflicted on how to handle her disobedience. He makes a choice that he thinks is right for Ellie, but ends up making things worse.
(Or, Ellie almost gets herself killed after putting herself in harm's way. Joel threatens to use his belt on her, but is reluctant to scare her that much. He 'compromises' with a switch instead. It does not go well for either of them.)
