Summary
A few days after they returned to their 5-year-mission on the new Enterprise the crew encounter another Federation ship. The USS Ikarus. There shouldn't be another Federation vessel so far out in space and before the Enterprise can make contact the Ikarus starts firing at them.
The Enterprise gets away with little damage - except for Spock getting gravely injured during the attack - but the ship has several failures after that, for example the transporters aren't working.
Just like a ghost has possessed the Enterprise! -
