“You want me to stay with you,” Aventurine said slowly. God, Ratio probably thought he was a complete idiot right now. Then again, was that really any different from before?

    Ratio nodded. “Yes,” he said.

    “... Why?”

“Because you can’t take care of yourself,” Ratio said. “And I have enough time on my hands to endeavor to do so.”

“You want to teach me how to take care of myself?” Aventurine said. He was starting to sound like a parrot. Ratio gave him an empty stare.

“That is, in fact, what I said,” Ratio sighed, exasperated. Had Aventurine annoyed him? Whatever, that didn’t matter. If he had, then that was better: Ratio would finally leave him alone.

    “Are you sure?” Aventurine asked.

Ratio’s face was slightly pink. Was it hot in here? “Yes, gambler, I am sure. How many times do I have to repeat myself?!”

“No more,” Aventurine said hurriedly, holding up his hands placatingly. “I understand now. Well, I don’t understand why, but I understand that you’re serious. Confusingly.”

“Ratio looked down at him, eyes wide and mouth parted, and whispered, ‘You look perfect.’

In that moment, Aventurine felt truly beautiful. He was no longer a tool just to be used. He was no longer an accessory or a pass time. He was the art; he was the sculpture; he was the poetry. He was a masterpiece, flawed and cracked as he was. Ratio still appreciated him, despite everything.

‘I’m so happy,’ Kakavasha said, choking on his tears. ‘I’ve never been this happy before.’

And then, Ratio kissed him like he was everything.

Ratio made Kakavasha feel like he was worth more than the sixty Tanbas. More than how useful he was to those who owned him. He made Kakavasha feel like he was worth more than just another abandoned IPC slave. He made him feel like more than just ‘Aventurine.’

Aventurine kissed Ratio, and for once in his life, he felt fully and truly loved for everything he was.

    I want to live.”

I wanted to be attractive, yet I think I never actually wanted to have sex or much close to it. I felt the sickness less and less.

It was simple, it was sweetness, it was good to know.
I don’t wonder about your indifference.

    Summary

I must stay here and worship my god while they all get what they want.

I am special. I am good. My god loves me.

The others could give in to their urges. Aventurine, the other men who he had met, even Robin—they could give in. Stray from the path of their god.

But Sunday would not. Sunday would stay obediently in his little cage, not even bothering to glance at the key.

“…Sunday would stay obediently in his little cage, not even bothering to glance at the key.

It hurt. It hurt. It hurt. It hurt.

I gave up love for you. Was that not enough devotion? What have I done to deserve this punishment?"

    Summary

Red Hood’s modulated voice is bone-chilling. Nearly every sleaze-bag in Crime Alley had become accustomed to the gravely robotic nature of it. The unnatural shifts in his words and the variations in pitch being just ever so slightly off putting. Borderline uncanny, yet everyone who’s heard it knows there’s a human behind that voice. A man who choses to blow a hole through someone’s skull without so much of an afterthought.

Though, no one had ever heard that voice scream.

    Not until tonight.

Or, Red Hood is captured, Nightwing saves him and while helping him afterwards, puts the wrong puzzle pieces together and confronts him which does not go quite how he planned.

"Jason averts his gaze, and eventually finds that article again. The stars in young Robin’s eyes as he soared through Gotham with Batman at his side.

Jason doesn’t know how to feel about all this. There’s still anger. Still frustration that will never really go away. But there’s also guilt and sadness for the life he lost. The world that was ripped away from him.

But as he looks at Dick, the optimism in his eyes resonates so deeply. He wants Jason back. Dick, who he had such a complex relationship with, wants him back.

If Dick can open his arms to Jason, then maybe so can Bruce. Maybe Jason can have his family again.

    Maybe.

And for the first time, Jason felt something other than anger when he thought of his father. It was small. Just a seed. But now he felt something that he could only name as hope."

““Oh, a shooting star.” For a moment, you caught the star racing across the sky, gleaming briefly before disappearing into the night. “If I had to go, I’d like to go out just as beautifully.” You were repeating Dazai’s words from earlier, but you felt them in earnest. To be one dying star of trillions; to be one small, beautiful event in this universe. For once, forcing the world to lay its eyes on you, even for a brief moment.

Maybe the earth mourned over every lost soul, shed a tear for each death felt on its surface. Maybe the earth knows not good or evil, but cradles each soul gently. Recycles each one into its next life, again and again. Maybe in that moment, in the moment you decide to jump, the world would be forced to pay attention. Coddle you with a moment of its attention. Just a moment. Just like the half-life of a firework or a shooting star.

Some fires burned brighter, while others were destined to snuff out early. And you were a candle forged with hardly enough wax to burn all of the love and grievances that were tangled together in your chest.”

    Summary

At eight years of age, Ivan had bet that Till couldn’t spin around thirty times without stopping. Naturally, Till had set out to prove him wrong. On his twenty-second spin, he had collapsed onto the ground, sweat pooling under his arms, lightheaded.

Grief, he realizes, is the same. He keeps rotating on a single axis, watching the world pass by around him, but his feet remain rooted to the same spot. The condensation on the shower wall that looks like raindrops, blueprints circled in red marker, the jiggly bread pudding served at dinner, the kisses shared between rebels his age at the bar, and even the stars twinkling through the haze of clouds. No matter where he goes, all the distance travelled only leads him back here again.

Till supposes not all of them make it to twenty-three. Not him. Not Ivan.

(Or: A year and a half after the final round of Alien Stage, Till learns how to grow anemones at the rebel base. Remembering Ivan happens somewhere in between)

All species of anemones are perennial. Once they die back after flowering, they remain dormant through summer and autumn, regrowing the following spring.

Once you plant one batch of anemones, they will continue blooming year after year.
