“Thank you for this honor, Your Royal Highness,” Paytai’s father says, bowing his head and bringing his fist to his heart. Paytai mimics the same gesture. He should be proud to be chosen as a companion. His father sure looks proud to be chosen as the Minister of Defense. “My son will uphold his duty. I will ensure it.”
What is a companion anyway? Paytai has learned little about the traditions of royals outside of what they learn in the local academy. Companion means friend. Paytai does not have a lot of those. If his younger sisters do not count, then he has no friends at all. Prince Ramil must not have friends either, since his father is forcing Paytai into this role. So, he and the prince have at least one thing in common.

His ma hesitates before asking, “Who?”
“The princes and the princesses in the stories. Are they always happy forever?”
His eyelids weigh down like sandbags, and his eyes close, but he hears the sadness in his ma’s voice. “Of course they do, my love. It wouldn’t be a fairy tale without a happy ending.”
“But they’re happy forever?”
“Yes. They usually get married at the end of the stories, and then they stay together forever.”
