An hour would’ve passed since the flash.
An hour of an abrupt pause, an abrupt change, and an abrupt end.
Approximately fifty-seven minutes ago, Marcy should’ve been lost. She gripped her rescuers’ shoulders in the recesses of a faraway castle, begged to some unknown karma that she’d wake up fully, and counted all the possibilities for failure in a millisecond of her breath.
For the many probabilities, she never considered rescue. She never considered that rescuers could win. That somehow, from Point A to Point B, Marcy never once thought about sudden brightness, the glow when it ate everything in sight, nor how she clamped her eyes shut to the point of red.
Until everything she knew faded to black.

yunan feels it too, she thinks, as they enter the chamber. she never would’ve come with olivia based on emotional reasoning alone; her ties to marcy were strong, but not strong enough to defy her own moral code when push came to shove. olivia had to be reasonable, because that was the only thing that would work past yunan’s morals, the only thing that would persuade her.
marcy wu had brought life to the city, and olivia misses that life with an ache that resonates so fiercely within her. she never quite knew how badly until now.
