The story of Voldemort's soul not choosing the body of the infant Harry Potter. On the night of the purge, the evil soul was torn in two, wandering aimlessly, and chose a dying child. Thomas Diggory, the one-year-old youngest son of the Diggory family, declared by the physicians at St. Mungo's to be lifeless, suddenly opened his eyes and burst into tears. He came back to life, healthier than ever. And so Voldemort grew up as Thomas Diggory, completely unaware of his past life. The wizarding world was eternally peaceful because the Dark Lord was dead.
