The hand on his hip tightened. Turned him. Perpetua let himself be guided, the way he always did in this room, where the weight of Frater Imperator fell from Copia’s shoulders like a cloak dropped to the floor and what remained was simply his brother—his twin—his something more. Copia’s mismatched eyes, one brown and one blue, met his own. The same eyes, reflected. The same face, gentler in some lights and harder in others, belonging to the person who knew him better than anyone alive.
“Sit with me?” Copia asked, and it was a question, genuinely a question, despite the way his fingers were already working the top button of Perpetua’s cassock free.
