If they had been frozen in fear before, the gang was now frozen in shock, the date echoing in each of their heads. Steve, Soda, and Two-Bit all turned to look at Darry. He was staring at the TV, eyes wide and terrified in a way that they hadn’t seen since the fateful day the Curtises had lost their parents. January 5. That was his birthday. His birthday had just been called, for the draft, the draft for the war. Darry had just been drafted. Darry was going to ‘Nam.”
While filming The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton told Rob Lowe (Sodapop) that his character would later go on to be drafted for Vietnam and die in the war. She later stated in a tweet that it wasn’t true, and she’d only said that as a last-ditch effort to make him cry. Even then, the idea of Soda going to the war has always been intriguing. When I was doing research on the Vietnam War, I found out that Soda would not have gotten drafted (through the birthday draft), but Darry would have. This is my take on the greasers going to Vietnam, with slightly more historical accuracy and some well-needed Stevepop.
